Through the ages, there has always been this concept of the ‘ideal woman’: beauty standards women strive to meet shaped by social, cultural and economic situations as well as class status. This series is an investigation into the different ways in which women have affected their bodies through culture-bound substances while attempting to alter their features to meet better what the society from their era glorified ‘beautiful’ to be. I worked with male models as I did not want to recreate this ‘ideal woman’ throughout history- rather wanted to explore how one’s appearance can vary through numerous, traditional beauty methods.
